The Top Five Books to Overcome Adversity

Here are the top five books to help you learn how to overcome adversity. We’ve read through all of these (and more!) to figure out what will be the most helpful for you.

  • (1) Viktor Frankl, "Man's Search for Meaning": One of the literary classics, Viktor Frankl details life story of when he was a Nazi concentration camp prisoner during World War II. Frankl, a psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor, discusses how he was able to find meaning and purpose in his life against adversity.

  • (2) Paulo Coelho, "The Alchemist": Another literary classic, this story is about Santiago, a young shepherd who embarks on a journey to make his own personal legend and fulfill his dreams. Through his adventure, he faces numerous challenges and obstacles, and along the process, learns important lessons about perseverance and the immense power of positive thinking.

  • (3)  Mark Manson’s, "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck": As the title says, Manson teaches a philosophy of looking at life that involves not caring about things that don't matter. Man’s book shows us how to overcome adversity and the constant problems of life by focusing on what is important and letting go of what’s not.

  • (4) Angela Duckworth’s, "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance”: What is grit? Duckworth’s story explores this concept and what it means to have the ability to persevere through life’s challenges and setbacks. It discusses how we can develop grit even if we don’t have it right now.

  • (5) Scott Peck, "The Road Less Traveled": Not to be confused with the famous Robert Frost poem, this book looks at the ideas of growth and personal development and how dealing with adversity is necessary if someone wants to achieve psychological/spiritual growth.

Learning how to overcome adversity is key to success. While no one book can give you the same experience as actually going through adversity, reading these books will help you learn how to best tackle adversity in your own life.
